Steps on How to Applique with Embroidery Machines
Get an Applique Design
First things first! Of course, you need to load all the applique design in the embroidery machine and choose the design you want.
The design is often simple as a heart, diamond, spade, clubs and many other simple designs.
Hoop the Finished Material
Next, place the material where your finished design will be on. Make sure that it is stable because every machine embroidery must have a stable material on it.
You can use a self-adhesive, tear-away stabilizer, or any other adhesive that can make the material stable. Remember to place the stabilizer between the bottom of the hoop and the needle plate.
Also, you can add another layer of stabilizer for more stability in the material so that you won't worry too much.
The Outline of the Applique
In this step, the Applique would stitch first the outline of the design you choose. You can also choose any color of the thread you want in the outline; besides, it is going to be covered anyway.
Placing the Applique Fabric
Now, place your chosen Applique fabric over the outline. You will need to hold the Applique fabric steady so that the fabric won’t be wrinkled, bunch up or pucker to you.
Another way to hold the Applique fabric in place is, you can try to use a double-stick tape, but the result is just as easy as holding it down.
In this step, the tacking stitch sews. It just simply tacks the Applique fabric down.
Cutting Away the Excess Fabric
Cut away the excess Applique fabric around the tacking stitch. But first, remove the hoop in the Embroidery machine but do not unloop it.
Make sure that you won’t cut the tacking stitch away. You can get close to the stitches and maybe try not to cut too many off the fabric.
Trimming the Fabrics
After cutting away most of the Applique fabric, you can easily trim off the stray pieces or leftover fabrics.
Sew the Stitches
Put the hoop back in the machine for the first layer of the stitches. After that, your machine will run another tacking stitch around the design you have chosen.
The usual stitch that is used in this step is a V-stitch or maybe an E-stitch. It’s like a double in case you have cut a stitch while trimming the hoop.
Then after that, the final outline stitch will be applied. Putting the last touch on your Applique.
